DIVISION 1 GAMES

Last years runner up, Alcohol Anonymous, begins the season with a home game against Grammar United, who are back in the first division after a short break. A match therefore with two teams who are known for their strong defense. Michael of course played the usual TS, that was successful last season and brought him promotion. But Nathan played an even stronger defense with his ZD, and EMPed no less than 136. Sure, the difference between AA and GU would have been less if it weren’t for the red card for DS Woody, almost at half time. But even without that, AA still would have been better, and with a 0.66 scorings rate out of 3 chances, I guess AA would have won it anyway. Good start for AA, who could be one of the candidates for the title. GU lose their first match, but there will come easier games for them, easier than an away game against AA.

SAEFL SEASON 11 WEEK 0

The opening match between FC Inferno, last seasons number 5 AND semi-finalist, and The Boelewieten, last years number 3, promised to be a very exciting match. And well, almost 24.000 spectators at Fire Stadium got what they came for: a thrilling match. The only thing that the home crowd will not be happy about, is what the score board showed after 90 minutes, as the home team lost the match with a narrow margin: 5-6. Of course, looking closer: TB actually was a lot better. And after the red card for AS Wilson, the difference in EMP was even bigger. That resulted in 19 chances for TB against 10 for FI. Easy win you’d think, but in this match, the story turned out different. In spite of the fact that GK Harriston wasn’t as skilled as his opponent, his performance was a lot better, and that brought a lot of excitement to this game. But in spite of Marco’s nailbiting, it was Jeroen who left with the 3 points, and well, that win was fair. Good start for TB, who are getting better every season. If they continue that, who knows what’s in for them this season. False start for FI, but I don’t think Marco has to be worried yet. FI has proven to be part of SAEFL’s finest, so I’m convinced we will see a lot of good things from them this season.

SAEFL SEASON 11 WEEK 0

2 seasons ago, this was one of those typical div 2 games, but look at what we have here at opening night in division 1: InterQuartile Rangers against The Jazz. Terry already proved that IQ’s trip to the top flight was no coincidence, because after winning the Cup, everybody could see that IQ is a team to watch out for. That must be exactly what Stewart has in mind for TJ. (By the way, do you all notice how I manage to keep Terry and Stewart apart this time??) ? Anyway, IQ played their strong ONE, and that proved to be too much for the strong CP played by TJ, that used to struck fear last season in div. 2. But Terry will have expected of course that div 1 is another ballgame, and that you have to pick your matches to win the points. An away game against IQ is not on the top of that list, and that isn’t for no reason of course. The difference wasn’t even that big, it was the home advantage that gave IQ more chances, and it was for the better performance of the IQ goalie that the score was bigger than the difference between these 2 teams actually was. That must be something that Stewart must hold on to, as he will get his chances. Terry holds on to the 3 points however, and I bet that feels a lot better.

SAEFL SEASON 11 WEEK 0

Apocalypse and Tottenford Heats ended last seasons as the numbers 6 and 8, and although they were safe from relegation in time, we have seen better performances from them in previous seasons. But hey, every team needs a season to build up once in a while, and when you can do that and remain safe in div 1, that shouldn’t be a problem. Especially when the next season is successful. Martin did not want to leave anything uncertain, and played a boost already in the very first match, to secure a good start, and who knows, leave a competitor behind. That was extra tough for Mark, because against AP’s strong WP, he already could not play his strong ZD side. That, plus the grudge, made that AP was a lot better, the difference between both teams was bigger than 11 EMP. AP should have won this one, but the points that Martin was after so badly, did not remain at Saturn, as he had to share them with Mark. The TH Goalie was in such brilliant form, saving chance after chance, that he alone won TH a point. Both managers won’t be happy that they did not win their first match. Knowing Martin and Mark, they only want to win of course. But looking at how this match went, Martin will be the one who feels robbed, while Mark certainly can’t complain about the result.

SAEFL SEASON 11 WEEK 0

NoShaKi WC ’98, one of the legendary teams, although they miraculously escaped relegation last season, started off with a home match against the reigning champion: Catbel Athletic. Now, if we go back to last season: CA’s performance was pretty good of course, they didn’t win the title for nothing. But the matches against NW were tough for them. They weren’t able to win, need to say more? Well, there is something more to say here, and that is that Mike and Ivo picked up things where they left them last season: CA still can’t beat NW, and yet we see a 0-0 game again. Since NW is also capable of playing a decent WP, ZD was no option for CA, and that means CP. Both NW and CA still showed a strong performance, emping around 130, but the difference between them was so small, that this game did not deserve a winner nor a loser. The red card was too bad for NW, but since the small diffence in EMP was in CA’s favour, it would have meant a sortlike diffence in NW’s favour without the red card, and in that case a 0-0 would have been just as fair.

SAEFL SEASON 12 WEEK 1

Martijn and Druss Legends are back in div 1, and already in their first match this season, they are to play Barts Jazz Greats. Knowing this is a clash between JG and DL, you’d expect a WP against WP game, with lots of chances and lots of goals. But you also know that thare is the opportunity that either one of these experienced managers might pull a trick out of the hat. In this case it was Martijn who took the risk and played OFF. The risk of course was that, if Bart also would have decided to go and play OFF against DL’s possible WP, both teams would have played OFF, and in that case it would probably have been JG who were the strongest. However, in this particular case –whether is was luck or cunning craftsmanship- it was DL who made the best tactical move. That dismantled JG’s strong attack (look at those power attackers!), and led to a lot less chances. Still, since both managers played with pretty good teams, and defense wasn’t that strong, they both managed to create quite some chances. In EMP, there wasn’t much difference, nor in chances. The fact that JG created just 1 chance more (39 against 38), plus the fact that JG’s goalie was slightly better (10 against 9.75) could have resulted in a victory for JG, and if that would have happened, you could have called it fair too, But on the other hand, I think that this draw is a result that’s just as fair.
