DIVISION 2 GAMES

It’s something like 2 seasons ago that Don took over the neglected Adirondak Renegades, and after 2 seasons of rebuilding, I think this will be the season that Don has to show us what he has been building towards. This is the season that he has to go for prizes and convince us of what he’s capable of as a manager. His first match is a tough one, as he starts the highest ranked team in last seasons division 2 table that not made it towards div 1. For Mike, it is even more recent that he took over England Under 21, and looking at the great performance he showed us last season, EU is also a regarded a team capable of showing us great things this season. So, the match between the nrs. 5 and 3 of last season, can be at least considered a clash for a playoff position already, and who knows for what more. Both Don and Mike played a strong attacking midfield play, Don the usual ONE, and Mike his WH. That served us an interesting match, in which AR –in spite of putting less NSL on the pitch- proved that they had the best match of suitable players to a good tactics. In the EU team, we noticed that CF Sage is a beast, and he will probably one of the players that will be feared in div 2. But on the other side of the medal, we see AM Galeano as a sign that EU may have strong players, but not 11 of them. AR does have 11 strong players, and probably even more than 11, and that could make the difference this season. At least it made a difference this match: 13-7

SAEFL SEASON 12 WEEK 1

Excelsior Warren is the first team we see in action this week, that dropped from the top division. Their first match in div 2 is already difficult, as they play against Point of Napier, who have been fighting for promotion in the last 2 seasons, and were close but unlucky twice. Nonetheless, Kelly has proven that PN is a dangerous team, and that is exactly what Simon experiences in his first match of the season. Just like the previous match, I think this match can already be considered a fight for at least a playoff position, and today Kelly was lucky enough that PN was the best team. In an attractive match (LB against WP), PN was better, and to be honest, that was not just because of the red card, because that was only in a later stage of the game. PN would have been better anyway, only the difference (that already isn’t that much) would have been smaller. 3 important points for PN, where EW will probably feel sad about the defeat.

SAEFL SEASON 12 WEEK 1

In the clash between Dead Scientists and Oaklake City, we see the second team that relegated from div 1, OC, against DS, who have proven last season to be getting better, and have crawled out of the dark hole they were in. We were shown an interesting match. To start with: Both Tim and Keith played with almost equally strong teams, looking at NSL. Tims WH and Keiths CP turned out to work out almost just as well, and so in EMP they also turned out to be almost equally strong. That eventually led to 7 chances for DS, against 6 for OC, because DS was slightly slightly better. The biggest difference between these two teams tonight was the GK. Where OC was able to put a NSL 10 GK on the pitch, the best that DS could do was NSL 9. With a 1 chance margin, you’d think that OC would have the better chance on winning the game. But GK Kalac had other plans. And it is not the first time this week that we see a GK with less NSL perform a lot better than his opponent. ( O MY GOD!!! Are we going to have a Season 10 deja-vu???) Kalac was the man of the match, saving more chances, and winning the match for DS. The 6-3 in the end was not a reflection of the strength of both teams, but Tim won’t care. Keith will be disappointed, but I bet his winning days won’t be long.

SAEFL SEASON 12 WEEK 1

The match between Lisbon United and Defrosted Tunafish is a landmark in SAEFL history. LU was playing in div 1 last season, while DT played their last match in div 3. And yet, this week these two teams play each other in a league match. After having seen EW and OC lose their match this week, we learned that being a former div 1 team is absolutely no guarantee for a good result. But Nuno was destined to get a good start, and putting his money where his mouth is, he played a boost to make sure that the first match this season is the first step towards getting back to div 1. Now Claudio played a pretty good team this week, and I bet that in div 3, he would have won easily, like almost every week last season. But div 2 is a higher platform. It’s a stage where you can meet teams that would fit div 1, and looking at the performance that LU shows this week: that is what you call a div 1 performance. There was 10 EMP difference between these 2 teams, and it’s only for the fact that DT’s goalie was in better shape that that difference was not put in goals. Still, the victory for LU was deserved, and Nuno does not just win 3 points with it, but also a nomination for being one of the main candidates for the title this year.

SAEFL SEASON 12 WEEK 1

A clash between Fanatics United and Deo Volente sounds familiar of course. These 2 teams have been battling each other already last season, in order to win promotion to div 2, and both of them were succesful, so now we have a copy of that game, only at a higher level. Brian had the advantage op playing at home, which is always nice in your first match of the season, but the home advandage wasn’t nearly as decisive as the red card for DV’s C. Palmer already in the 3rd minute! If you look at what that cost them: almost 14 EMP!! Without the red card, FU and DV would have been almost equally strong, and given the fact that DV played a strong defense, and looking at FU’s scoring rate (below 0.5), I bet this match was destined to end in a 0-0 result. Bad luck for Otto, and champagne and flowers for Brian, who will be happy with his good start in div 2. Otto will surely make up for this false start, don’t worry.

SAEFL SEASON 12 WEEK 1

Without a doubt, the most unlucky team in entire SAEFL was Englehart Storm. In their opening match at Englehart Dome, against Newton Heath, they actually should have been the better team. Not only did they put more NSL on the pitch, but they also should have got more EMP out of it. Should have that is, because they didn’t. Due to not one, but 2 red cards, ES missed out on 11.89 EMP!! And especially the red card for GK Aussie was of big influence, because not only did it cause a loss of 7.13 EMP, it also meant that Newton Heath could fire their shots at an NSL 8 GK, instead of an NSL 10 GK. And so, although Robert and NH came to Englehart Storm as the underdog, they left the stadium triumphant, beating ES 10-6. Of course, this victory for NH is a little misleading, when it comes to the strenght that both teams show. In spite of this comfortable win, Robert has some work to do with NH, if they want to fight for a playoff spot or a cup surprise (and keep that Giant Killer story continuing). On the other hand, Peter shows that ES has a team that can be dangerous, and with 1 or 2 adjustments (AM’s!) he can be in the div 2 top.
