DIVISION 1 GAMES

You shouldn’t actually say this, but when it comes to the league, FC Inferno’s season is over. At least they have nothing left to fight for. They’re too far behind to really have a chance at a top 3 position, and the relegation places are too far away as well. Sure, you can always say that pride is at stake here, and Marco should try to get the best out of it, but FI has a much better stage for that: the cup! So, although Marco will give away nothing, he won’t go all the way either, and that could mean a nice opportunity for NoShaKi WC ’98 and their new manager Vince to win important points to escape the relegation zone. Vince must have figured that out either, as he played a boost. And looking backwards, there are 2 ways of looking at that: First you can say that that was a little too optimistic, as FI was still a lot better, the difference between them was 13 EMP, and that is a lot. On the other hand: FI missed 3 out of 4 chances, but you never know, they might have scored twice if awarded 5 chances, so this boost could have been important. Nonetheless, by scoring a penalty that led to the 1-1 score after 90 minutes, Vince will know that NW was very fortunate this match. However, even though NW win, no, steal a point, only 1 point might not even be enough to escape relegation. At least it’s not enough to escape the danger zone this week.

SAEFL Season 12 WEEK 20

The Boelewieten against Catbel Athletic is yet another dutch top half clash. TB are the nr. 3 on the table, 7 points behind JG (will that be too much for title aspirations?), while CA is on 5th place, 10 points behind TB. It’s only a small difference on the table, but in points it’s quite a gap. Nonetheless, the difference between TB and CA was in CA’s advantage, although of course that had everything to do with the fact that Ivo played a grudge. On the other side, Jeroen surprised by playing LB against a CA side that hardly ever plays ZD lately (well, except for last week that is), and was lucky enough that CA in fact did play ZD. However, in spite of the surprise and the extra bonus EMP that gave to the TB attackers: the TB attackers were no top attackers, and although with 91.5 NSL the TB lineup was not bad, it wasn’t good enough to stop this strong CA: 1-2 With this result, I guess it’s safe to say that TB is out of the race for the title now, but are still ahead of the nr. 4 team, AA. Or will CA be the nr. 4 team now? That depends on what AA have done. The gap between TB and CA has been reduced to 7 points now, which is still a big gap with only 5 matches left.

SAEFL Season 12 WEEK 20

Grammar United and The Jazz are 2 teams in relegation problems. Or, actually, GU aren’t in relegation problems anymore, as Mike has already accepted going down to div 2 and has started rebuilding for next season already, so: no problem anymore! On the other hand, TJ is on the good side of the relegation line, but not safe at all, so this match against GU (who already sold their freak defender) could be a good opportunity to do something about that. Especially since we have seen NW win a point this week, and because of goal difference, that could mean that NW could catch TJ on that. But no such thing happened. Stewart didn’t even need to play a grudge or boost to be the better team, and that in an away game. The 2-1 was close, but what was important was the 3 points, which means that the gap between TJ and NW has increased to 3 points. However, with 5 matches left, there’s no reason the lean back and relax, as 114 EMP is not something to feel safe with, not in div 1.

SAEFL Season 12 WEEK 20

Apocalypse is another team in that relegation zone. This weeks match is one of the toughest this season, when they play against the leader of the table, Jazz Greats. Both AP and JG are known for their attacking WP. However, where Martin played that WP as expected, Bart decided to rest a couple of players, and played OFF, to counter AP’s attack. A very smart tactical move by Bart (am I really saying this??), because if Martin would have chosen to play OFF to counter a possible WP from JG, then JG’s OFF would still have been better. So, if there ever was an opportunity to rest a couple of players who star in a WP team, and play OFF, it is of course against another WP. Bart decided right, and the 25-6 victory was very much deserved. Just have a look at the EMP: if you manage to get 123 EMP by playing OFF, you must have a heck of a team, so no wonder JG is title candidate nr. 1 at the moment. TB already lost, so for JG the question now is what DL will have done. No points for AP, but Martin may have counted on that this week.

SAEFL Season 12 WEEK 20

Tottenford Heats against Druss Legends is another clash between 2 dutch managers in the top half of the table. Mark is playing his cup match next week again, but instead of resting players and give away the match, he rested some good players, and played a grudge to compensate that. Which was a wise decision, as the difference between TH and NW (so: the relegation zone) was only 5 points, and NW just won a point. Given the fact that TH has a lot of good players, Mark still played a pretty good team while resting some quality stuff at the same time. With that grudge on top of that, TH eventually reached 143 EMP, which is simply very good. On the other side, Martijn probably already expected this would be a difficult match, and played a boost. However, the boost did not help him. DL’s wingplay was good, but not good enough. Even with the boost, it did not get above the 124 EMP, and that meant almost 20 EMP difference. The 30-19 in the end was a good reflection of the match, and with that, DL lose 3 very important points in their race for the title. JG are now 4 points ahead, and have a much better goal difference. It will be a hell of a job for Martijn to set this right, but hey, this is football, so you never know what happens. Mark catch up with FI, and that makes that 5 from the 6 top teams now are dutch. And I wouldn’t be surprised if Nathan has dutch ancestors too…….

SAEFL Season 12 WEEK 20

Alcohol Anonymous against InterQuartile Rangers means the nr. 4 team against the nr. 8 team. Only 6 teams separated these 2, and a victory for IQ could cut that in half. However, that is not what Nathan had in mind, and with a strong CP team (even while resting some star players), he was too strong for IQ, where Terry didn’t do anything wrong, but IQ just wasn’t as strong as AA. With the 3 points, AA are 5 points behind TB now. Is that still too big a difference, or…..? For IQ, I still think their team is too good to relegate, but they are on 9th position now, and that relegation line is getting nearer and nearer, NW is only 2 points away. So I guess things at the bottom will remain exciting until the very end.
