DIVISION 1 GAMES

Grammar United against NoShaKi WC’98 is a relegation match. Very much. In fact, GU is already relegated, but for NW, nothing is sure yet. They are on 10th place, so in the relegation zone, but only 3 points away from safety. In other words: they are 1 victory away from staying in div 1. Especially since their goal difference is better than TJ’s (who are on 9th position now). Mike apparently had a grudge left, and decided to play that against NW, and one of the reasons to play the grudge this week could be that a home match against the nr. 10 on the table might be easier to win than a lot of other matches. That might be so under different circumstances. However, this week was different. Vince looks destined to save NW for div 1, and wants to win the remaining 3 matches. For this match, Vince even threw in a boost. The boost made that NW had a lot more NSL on the pitch: 94 against 88.50. However, GU –because of that grudge of course- had the better EMP, the difference was 5.5 EMP. What decided this match, and the outcome of it, was the GK’s. NW played a NSL 9 GK, and GU a NSL 8 GK. Because of that, NW could turn around the EMP difference, and win the match plus 3 very important points. Another loss for GU, although it won’t make any difference for relegation anyway. NW now has to wait what TJ will have done.

SAEFL Season 12 WEEK 23

Tottenford Heats and InterQuartile Rangers are 2 midtable teams. They are on 6th and 8th position, and when it comes to the league, they haven’t got much left to fight for. Both Mark and Terry have managed to avoid relegation, and having said that: that turned out to be everything they seemed to be capable of this season. When it comes to the league that is. Might be not much of a surprise, as both TH and IQ are known cupfighters, and this season proves to be no different. IQ are unfortunately out of the cup by now, but TH has managed to reach the semi’s. So, maybe the only question this week would be: does Mark save his team for the cup? The answer is no. He played a pretty strong team, plus a boost. Given the fact that TH can play a very very strong ZD, it means that it will be very hard for IQ to score. However, IQ has a pretty strong team as well, and not just that: they even had a grudge left for this match! Because of that, they turned out to be even better than TH: 148 EMP against 146 EMP (makes you wonder what these teams are doing at 6th and 8th position actually…oh yes, the cup….). Anyway, in the end: IQ may turn out to be better, it was only 2 EMP, and against such a strong ZD, we all know that (unless there are penalties) there is only one possible outcome: 0-0. And that is exactly what happened here!

SAEFL Season 12 WEEK 23

Catbel Athletic against Jazz Greats is last seasons champion against the current leader of the table. And apart from that, it’s also a clash of 2 dutch top teams. Ivo may not be going for the championship this season (that’s what happens if you went for the title the season before) CA still turns out to be a pretty strong team, especially after the midseason aging, which of course explains their top half position. Bart already expected this to be a tough match, and apparently decided to rest his top WP team (they really were in need of rest I guess) for the last couple of matches, and play a strong TS instead. The main reason for that will probably be the fact that the very last match of the season, is the clash between the nrs. 1 and 2, JG vs. DL. Because of that, JG played a TS that was pretty strong (you can’t be the number 1 candidate for the title with only 11 decent players). In fact, in spite of Ivo’s boost, 0-0 would have been a very fair result for this match, and that is what the score after 90 minutes would have been, if it weren’t for that penalty. Damaseb however, made no mistake from 11 meters, and that brought CA the victory, and makes JG have to wait what DL have done, as they might lose the lead in div 1 again.

SAEFL Season 12 WEEK 23

The Jazz vs. FC Inferno is a bottom half match. That sounds like a pretty “close” match, but the truth is that FI, the nr. 7, have been safe for ages (and besides that, they are still in the cup semi-finals as well!), while TJ are at 9th position, which means they’re just on the good side of the danger line, but still very much fighting against relegation, especially now we already know that NW have won their match this week. I think Stewart may call himself lucky that Marco decided to rest a bunch of players this week, since the cup is his only priority now. That made that TJ and FI turned out to be equally strong this week, and gave TJ the opportunity to do well. They made no mistake, and the 5-5 in the end was a fair reflection of the strength of both teams this week. So, a point each, and with that TJ manage to stay on the good side of the relegation line. However, NW are only 1 point away, so the relegation battle will probably remain exciting until the very end.

SAEFL Season 12 WEEK 23

After we just saw JG lose their match, the main question this week of course would be: can Druss Legends take advantage of that? The answer is simple: no they can’t. Martijn did not play the strongest possible DL (probably saving some for that very last clash as well), and against an unleashed AA, who keep winning their matches week after week lately, and also played a boost this week on top of that, that turned out to be not enough. Not quite. Of course, Nathan expected DL to play WP, and played a strong OFF. And not just because of that boost, AA was simply the better team in this match, and the 4-0 after 90 minutes, or at least the victory, was just fair. Both sides suffered from a red card, so that was even. So, the result is that DL does not take advantage, and stay in 2nd place, 1 point behind JG, with 2 matches left to play, including the clash against each other. It also means that in theory, TB still has a chance to climb to 2nd place, but I don’t know if we should consider that a serious thought. With the victory, AA remain in 4th position, still ahead of CA, who in spite of all their good matches in a row, still can’t catch AA because they seem to have just as many good matches in a row ?

SAEFL Season 12 WEEK 23

The Boelewieten are the nr. 3 team, and I already mentioned that in theory, they have a chance at the runner up position. For that they need to win all their own games of course, and of course have to hope that DL lose their remaining games. With the JG vs. DL clash still to come, you never know what is possible, so let’s just see what TB will do. In their home game, they face Apocalypse, the nr. 11 on the table. AP are 5 points behind TJ, and we already saw TJ win a point, so if AP want to stay in, they cannot afford to lose any points anymore, and have to win this match. Which explains the boost played by AP. However, it might be a little late for the boost. A little too late. That boost could have better been played in easier matches than away games against TB. In spite of AP’s boost, TB was still the better team, and although the difference was not very big, it was still big enough for a fair victory: 18-13. With this, TB stay on a very good league position, while AP is unofficially relegated.
