Well
well, with only the dessert of the season left to
play (the playoffs, the cup final and the world cup final), this is the last
week of the regular season.
And
what a season it was.
First
of all, let me congratulate the managers that won the
championship:
Well
done guys! In all 3 cases, I guess it's fair to say that the best team/manager
combination won.
JG
may have been a little lucky last week, but if I am objective I have to admit
that the JG squad is better than the DL squad, and that -although very
unfortunate in last weeks match- DL has been lucky a few times as well, earlier
in the season. Sure, TB, AA and CA (in that particular order) proved to be
strong teams too, especially in the 2nd half of the season. But the championship
is not over only half a season of course. So, in JG we have a winner that div 1
can be proud of.
For
AR, you cannot say that they have been that lucky. No, in fact, when you have
to point out something that AR has been lucky with, it actually be LU's bad luck.
Nonetheless,
I also know from experience that that is one of the risks of playing ZD. AR
played attacking, and with that, they avoided that risk. That,
plus the fact that they simply have a very, very good team, makes that AR is a
true champion.
When
you consider what
In
div 3, we have Len and SH. The combination of a great team plus an experienced
manager who did not make any mistakes this season, made that already long
before the end of the season, there was no doubt about SH winning the div 3
title, so that SH could get back to where they belong:
div 2. (It's up to Len now to see if the level of
"were SH belongs" can get any higher than div 2 :-))
When
it comes to my own CA: After winning last years title, it was obvious that this
season was needed for rebuilding.
A
lot of experienced players with high NSL were traded away, and CA welcomed
young and promising players in return.
Of
course, trades like that are very promising for future perspectives, but it
also causes a lot of points. That is exactly what happened in the first half of
the season. CA was just able to hold a spot on the good side of the danger
line, and was not able to do well in the cup in the beginning of the season.
In
the second half of the season, after the midseason aging had taken place, we
could already see the improvement, and could watch CA take a step forward.
It
was too late to make up for the cup results, as we were already out of it of
course.
In
the league however, we started winning our matches week after week after week,
and climbed the table with brave pace.
It
was only because of the fact that
But
that is nothing to be ashamed of, as AA is a great team, with a great manager,
who are in fact further in their rebuilding process than CA is.
Altogether,
I can say that the fact that we were not involved in any hunting for prizes (no
cup, no league glory), plus the fact that -in spite of the relatively poor
start- we were never in doubt that CA had no reason to be scared of relegation,
the season was not very exciting for CA and their supporters.
Nonetheless,
this is exactly what we expected, and knowing that plus knowing how CA is
developing in just 1 rebuilding season, I can truely
say that we are very pleased with the way things are going.
Which brings us to what hopefully will be exciting.
Of
course, it is too early for predictions for next season, especially with both
the aging plus the new youth from the draft still on the way, and you simply
don't know how those things will turn out and affect the team.
Nonetheless,
I hope that -with all the young and promising players in the CA roster- next season will be
exciting again for CA. Too soon yet to say if it will be exciting because CA is
going for the cup, or for the league, but it is my intention to go for one of
them of course.
Which
one it will be, will of course depend on the development of CA itself, of
course, in the first place, and the development of the competition in the
second place. You have to analyse where your best
chances are, and that of course also depends on the competition.
Anyway,
there's still 1 match to play, and after that we have some even better matches
ahead of us.
Let's
enjoy those!
Druss Legends
Damn, this should have been the most
important match of the century, but it isn't...I expected TB to win last week,
but luck was on
F.C Inferno
Time
to do that classical balance of the season... In the league, we will finish 6th
or 7th, depending on this week result. Not so bad, if we focused in the league
we couldn't probably bother JG or DL, so the decision to go for the cup still
sounds as the right one. In the first leg of the season we lacked some power
and, besides that, aging turned FI in a very defensive team... This transformed
FI in a very hard team to be defeated, only JG lost less
games than us. On the other hand, we had a hard time scoring, with the
worse attack in the whole league and more draws than anyone else. Some late
additions, such as AMs Pluto and Flannery will help
us next season.
Considering
all this, the mid-table position in the league plus the top 4 finish in the
league can be considered fair enough. We dreamed about winning the cup again,
but un unlucky first leg in the semi-finals destroyed
our plans... It's part of the game.
However,
the season is not over. I'm still managing GER in the WC, and winning that
would be lovely. Let's wait and see!
Thank
you all for a wonderful season... Relegation battle in div. 1 was tough as
always and the league title was undecided until the last rounds...
On
divisions 2 and 3 we have some great teams coming, AR, LU, SH seems to be very
promising. Peter, once again, was amazing this season and for all he has done
for all this years he already has my eternal admiration!!! Keep SAEFL running,
with
See
you all next season! ;)

InterQuartile Rangers
Another game that doesn't mean much. But I guess we have to play it.
After
the last game I'm not sure I want to. In
one game we nearly doubled the number of ejections for the season. I'd still like to see a long run of numbers
from the RNG used for SAEFL. So I have
few good expectations for this week's game.
Who knows? Maybe it we'll see a
rash of injuries??

Congrats
to all winners! TB had some hope this season but a very small selection, an EFL
competition and very bad injuries of key players made us loose to many points.

YES!
Another Div 1 title. That feels good, especially after
such a battle with my former good friend
Also
my respect to
I
won one before but to be honest, this feels nicer. For the greater part because
this season I didn't have a team as good as the one I had in season 9. Not nsl wise but mostly because this season I didn't have a
really good second tactic. To make a long story short, this one gave me a lot
more headaches and I wasn't sure I would pull it off until my fortunate victory
against TB last week.
Since I want to write more press (and the bonus of course!)
I’ll start this week with the reasons and consequences for this seasons title run.
At
the beginning of the season 10 I had an old ONE/ZD team that did win the title
but that was old. That, together with the fact that both tactics are boring as
hell decided me to build a WP team again. I had to trade anything I had for a
couple of big CF’s (nothing else matters when playing WP J) and some promising
youth. I couldn’t field more then 88 nsl at the start of that season and I just managed to stay
in Div1. I did not win a single game in the first half of the season but
midseason aging saved me.
I
stayed into div1 by a point I think…
By
season 11 I had traded in a freak CF and a freak S’r. I had no depth but I did have a really good
top 11. In those situations the choice is easy. No depth, great players? Get
ready for a cup run! Too be sure a had great run but
in the end I got beaten fair and square by IQ managed by
Actually
that was the first time I didn’t achieve a goal set out in the course of a
season so it did came a bit of a shock. I did finish runner up in the div1
championship once (s8) but that just sorta happened,
I never really thought I had a chance.
Furthermore
I noticed that a cup run was a bit boring. There aren’t too many matches and
even less that are close. One grudge in the quarters and two in the semis will
get you a long way. This isn’t too bad if you win the final of course but if
you don’t, well, wasted season right? And not a very exciting
one as well. I do wonder how Mark (TH) copes…
After
the aging and the beginning of season 12 I still (of course) had no depth, my
team was noticeably older but I did have an attack that was more then
excellent. I had another CF freak and now I has an attack line of: S
11
CF 11.5 CF 12.5 and a overall nsl
of 99.5.
By
the contrast you can probably tell the state my defense was in btw…
At
first I thought the cup was, once again my best option but I didn’t really feel
ok (see above) with another try. So I doubted between rebuilding or trying for the title. Basically I decided to hell with it
and I gave it a shot. I made a few trades but these three trades I think
influenced the team the most.

This
player is also 55/54 in stats and symbolises the fact
that you don’t have to have a big roster full of young players to win the
title. Which is, in case you haven’t noticed is what I’m
trying to prove :)
If
you aim to get the best possible roster you need to trade for young players.
And you need to “win” in every trade because want to be better off in the long
run. On the other hand, if you decide to go for a prize a
32 nsl 9 player with 55 stats will do
as well as an average 21 nsl 9.
Except
for 1 player my whole MF and W’r departments consist
of older and/or dropping players and I have less then 30 players in my roster. Very crappy in the long run, but effective enough for this season.
Of
course as a result I have wrecked my team just at the moment it needed an
influx of youth. My freaks are very very good but
they are not young anymore so their value is lowered. To make matters worse I
traded in my scout 10 for a coach 10. Sure it helped me in a couple of matches
but the price is being paid now. But those things don’t really matter because
although this makes rebuilding tougher it doesn’t make it less fun. And I did
it before and I’ll manage it again. Of that I’m certain.
If
you don’t take a gamble once in a while you’ll have a good looking roster but
you’ll run the risk of finishing 8th to 3rd season after season and although
that’s a great performance, games are meant to be won. Not
just not played well. The way the game is played now mostly all division
titles are contended by two teams with 10 teams watching. I understand not
everybody has a roster that’s good enough but surely more teams then just two
are good enough to try?? Be involved more and don’t respect the big teams too
much!
For
that you will need to trade(!), to take a few risks
and sacrifice some talent. Just be smart about it. Value older players and
please please please, ask
about stats. Not every nsl 9 is as good as the other!
For
the coming season I won’t bother anyone and I’ll trade my freaks (highest bid
gets them :) and I’ll do my best not to relegate. Which is
far from certain because I’ll have to trade all my high nsl
players just to get some youth in. As far as I can tell the title will
be contended by AA and TB. Both teams are very very
impressive and at least one of them has an excellent manager on board :)
I’d
like to see someone to kick their asses, to make a long story short!
Good
luck for this season (playoffs and cup) and the next!

"For
now we need to focus on promotion to division two again and that can also be
done with this team, but we do indeed need some new guys in the team. So I
think I'll try to do some transfers inbetween the
seasons", was Borggreve clear. "But that
doesn't mean that I will do some panic buying. As I said before with the
current team we're also strong enough to play for promotion."
If the team
will be able to copy their strong season in the cupcompetition
will be known after next season. "Bit I think it will be a tough season in
the cup competition. The division 1 teams will now be watching us and every
team is warned when they face us in the cup. But that doesn't mean we can't do
it again." The manager announced that the final 8 is the goal for the cup
competition. "It's only one round below this season, but it's not our main
competition next season, where it became already soon in the past season. So
that makes it even more complicated to go all the way again to the semi's."
"But
to be honest I will be satisfied if the team plays at their best next season in
both competitions and we'll see then at the end what it brought us."

Excelsior
From The Excelsior Herald...
The
faithful are still scratching their heads wondering how their team have managed
to secure a play off spot this season. Many would have been happy just to halt
the slide. The problem is that Excelsior are clearly
punching above their weight, as evidenced by their hopeless goal difference.
When they come up against a decent team, in form, they tend to get creamed.
This has left many believing that next season will be of the, long and hard
variety, whatever happens in the play offs. But the Herald does not believe in
pessimism and in the one off cup tie atmosphere of the play offs, who
knows what can happen. There may just be enough experienced heads out there to
see Excelsior home and no one in this town would wish to look that gift horse
in the mouth.
Fanatics United
One week
left! Can OC avoid division 3? We'll have to see!
Good luck
everyone!
Well
last week we lost which was not entirely unexpected. LU was the better team, though only by a
little bit, and they did deserve the win.
So
they get to be promoted and we get to go to the playoffs, for the third season
in a row. We have already accepted that
we are going to the playoffs and not getting promoted so instead of hoping for
a miracle and trying to beat LU out, we are just going to accept our fate and
get ready for the playoffs.
This
week, we play EW, who, like us, are already guaranteed a spot in the playoffs
and do not really have anything to play for either except to move up a spot in
the standings. If they play their top
string and are trying to win, then we will probably get pummelled
but if they are resting players too then the game will probably turn out into a
fairly even match.
We are resting all of our top players this
week so they will be ready for the, hopefully, two games of the playoffs. We are playing a boost too, which may seem a
bit weird but we had saved it in anticipation of this game being important and,
even though it is not, we might as well play it or else it is wasted. The boost may help us win but the three points
(or lack thereof) really will make no difference.
DIVISION 3
African Selection
Well, with
a draw against FE, the Selects assure themselves of a playoff position in their
effort to claw back into Division2. The final home game of the season was a
sell out (haven't seen many of those this year!!!) This will keep the Canadian
manager together.
This week
we play against Trav Spoodle,
with whom we drew the first game of the season. We outshot
them, but were stymied by the excellent goaltending. If we can win this one, we will have a
winning record both at home and on the road. We also have positive goal
differential on the road (a big 1 goal difference). So, even though we have
secured a playoff spot, we will not be sending out a second rate team.
I hope
everyone enjoyed the U20 World Cup. I managed to take in a couple of the first

SH squad goes into their final match of this season with a slightly different
approach to the lineup going on the pitch versus AV.
Manager
Lear stated," We have a number of players that provided excellent
leadership to SH and have been great role models for our younger players
throughout the season but haven't had a lot of playing time. So I thought it
would be a good gesture to put these players in the starting lineup.
Also,
I don't expect some of these players to be back with us next season so it is a
fitting tribute to allow these players to go out in style."
SH is looking forward to next season.
Manager Lear commented," This was the most successful season that I have
had in my SAEFL managerial career. SH had tons of team chemistry this season,
along with tremendous support from our fans. SH is truly looking forward to
doing battle in D-2. I can tell everyone right now that SH isn't going to lay down and take it easy next season in D-2. As the saying
goes, SH is going for the jugular of D-2! We are definitely going to take a run
