DIVISION 2 Play Off GAMES

Point of Napier just missed out on direct promotion, after struggling with LU until the very last week of the season. Kelly did not have time to be sad about that, because she had to get busy with the playoffs this very next week. However, that is a good thing of course, as these playoffs mean another (and final) chance on reaching division 1. In this first semi final, Fanatics United are the opponent. Being a new team in div 2, FU immediately reached the playoffs, and of course, Brian can be proud of that. Speaking of which: the teams that promoted from the 3rd division last season, ended on 4th, 6th and 7th position, which is a good achievement in my opinion. Unfortunately (for Brian that is), Kelly demonstrated what the difference is between a team that plays in the top of Div 2 for a number of seasons in a row, and a team that just promoted from div 3, and –although talented- doesn’t have that experience yet. Where FU was able to play with more NSL, PN showed what matters in the end, and that is EMP. We saw a 9 EMP difference between those teams, and it was only because of the better performing FU goalie that the win for PN wasn’t any bigger than 7-5. Nonetheless, a win is a win, and I bet that Kelly doesn’t care how big it is, as long as it takes her and PN to the final. Well, it did of course, so we will see her back soon in the playoff final, fighting for that chance on promotion to div 1. Too bad for Brian and FU, but I am sure that we will see FU in the playoffs again, or maybe even more.

As already mentioned in the previous match: along with FU, there was another team that just promoted from div 3 and reached the playoffs. Claudio had a very, very good season, being the new kid in town in div 2, and reaching 4th position in the end just like that. With that, DT was in the race for a top 3 position until the very end. However, apparently Claudio considered it too much for DT to win promotion twice in a row. When looking at the no more than 72.25 he played, I can’t think of any better explanation. This might be a good decision of course. Sure, winning promotion is nice, and it is a good achievement. But what does it bring to your team when you can’t cope in the top league? It’s no fun at all to lose every week, and that would take the attention away from the fact that Claudio has done such a great job. In that perspective, I also think it’s a fair decision not to try and make it into the final, and give up there. The final should be a true fight between 2 teams that really want to win that promotion. And one of the teams that in fact DOES want that promotion, is Excelsior Warren. Simon and EW know what it takes to play in div 1, as they have been there before. Simon was unlucky to see S Pigeon leave the field because of a red card, as that caused him EMP loss. In this match, it did not matter, because DT did not go all the way anyway. However, in the next match, when EW plays against PN in the final, EW has to do better than this, or Kelly will have an easy promotion after all.
