With 3 points out of the first 2 matches, both Adelaide Kickers and Vitesse Arnhem belong to that large midtable group already. This weeks match was to decide which of the 2 teams (if any), would go for the top of that group. Fred played his strongest team, with the usual WP tactics, where David played quite a strong team, but not the strongest possible. And that is, in my opinion, what decided which team grabbed the victory. Already in NSL, the difference was clear, and also in EMP or chances, it was too big for AK to overcome. Both teams were unlucky, AK because of a red card, and VA because of an injury, but altogether I think that nobody can say anything about VA winning this match. VA climb the table, and lead the midtable pack.

Fantastic Eleven is one of the 3 teams with a 100% score after 2 matches. In this weeks match against the Falcons, Clive would find out if his FE would be strong enough to stay in the lead after 3 matches. Nik and his Falcons of course were not willing to cooperate. Nik already expected Clive to play a strong WP side, and countered that with OFF. That choice of tactics was good, as it weakened the FE attack a great deal. But on the other hand, the FA team on the pitch was only 72 NSL, and that is too low to win points. Sure, the FE EMP was weakened, but it was still a lot more than FA did. The victory for FE was never in danger, and considering the 25 EMP difference (!) and the number of chances for each team, the 1-7 didn’t even reflect the difference in strength on the pitch. FE stay at the top of the table, and who knows where it will end this season. FA still in midtable, but not on a playoff spot (yet?).

Smoking Guns is the second team we see in action, to win 6 points out of the first 2 matches. This week, their opponent is Trav Spoodle, in my opinion one those teams that you can never be sure of. They can be very good one week, and very bad the other week. You never know what they are up to, so it’s always a surprise. Monty didn’t play a great team this week. But the TV team wasn’t that much better, and since neither team played a boost or grudge, the home advantage compensated a little on the SG side. A little, that is. But not all. TV remained the better team. Not just in EMP, but also in chances: 29 against 22. With a NSL 10 GK on both sides, you’d expect a win for TV. But once again, it turned out that in love and war and football, everything is possible. GK Knots was the hero of the day, winning 3 points for SG: 15-12! Remarkable actually. Monty plays a 87.25 NSL team this week, and in the end it turns out that he is leading the table with a 100% score out of 3 matches. Man, you should watch SG go if they really go for it and play grudges and stuff! TV are once again unlucky, but they will surely win their matches if they keep playing like this.

With 4 points out of the first 2 matches, the African Selection are just behind the 3 leaders of the table, and since Colin wants to get back to div 2 a.s.a.p., they intend to keep the pressure at the top teams. This weeks opponent is Christers Aros VK, one of the 3 teams in div 3 that is still without points. And after this week, they are still without points, because AS simply was too strong for them. The difference in NSL between the 2 teams wasn’t even that big. But in EMP, it turned out to be a lot bigger. Of course, the 2 injuries at the AV side had some influence on that, but not all of it. AS still would have had the better EMP. So, AS keep the pressure and stay right behind the leaders. If one of them would make a mistake, AS catches up with them. (Oh well, we already saw 2 of the 3 make no mistake this week, so Colin has to wait what Len will do.) I don’t know what is worse for Christer, this loss or the 2 injuries, but at least I know that things are not going as they should, at Aros. Time to turn things around Christer!

Well, Colin doesn’t have to wait long to see what Len did. Already in this next match, we see Stannington Historical playing against Speedsters at Someplace Old. It was already mentioned that SH is one of the leaders, and their opponent, Speedsters, are at a midtable position with 3 points out of the first 2 matches. Shaun wanted to surprise Len and played a strong team and a grudge. And I bet that Len did not see this coming. He might have played a boost I think, if he would have expected this. However, I guess that this scenario is even better for him, as it turns out that in spite of the strong SS team with the grudge, SH appears to be so strong that they still win this match without too many troubles. And on top of that, Len didn’t play that boost, so het gets to save that as well. It is great to see SH perform this season (finally!), once again reaching almost 130 without a boost or grudge. They are the team to beat this season, and considering that, I think it was a brave thing to play that grudge, but Shaun might have better saved it for another match.

The last game this week is between Melchester Rovers and Blue Storm FC. 16207 spectators at the Race Stadium saw 2 teams that were still without points after 2 matches, and knew for sure that that would be different at the end of the day, at least for 1 team. Bruce must have thought (good thinking by the way) that a home game, against a fellow team at the bottom would make a good opportunity to win the first points, and played a boost. That made indeed that MR was quite a bit stronger than BS, as Brandon just fielded a “regular” team, without any boost. In fact, the result was 33 chances for MR against 28 for BS. Not a big difference, given the total number of chances (because both teams played rather attacking), but still, it was 5 chances. On the other hand, BS had a better goalie (NSL 10 against 9.75). And that difference “killed” the difference in chances: 15-15 was the result at the end. Now of course, Bruce will maybe feel a little more sad for not having won this game, than Brandon, because of the grudge. And I admit, the chances on winning this one were slightly better for MR. But on the other side, the difference wasn’t that big, so this is not a very surprising result. It’s football.
