DIVISION 1 GAMES

After 4 league matches have been played, there are 3 teams leading the table with 4 points. This week, we see two of these teams play each other: Alcohol Anonymous against Druss Legends, and that of course makes this match the match of the week. We know both Nathan and Martijn as good managers, when it comes to tactics and making choices. But that doesn’t imply that they make the same choices. Martijn is known for getting a good series of results right from the start, work towards a top position, and go on from there. While Nathan on the other hand is holding back a little more, in the beginning. He first runs a series of matches, then has a good idea of what his own team is capable of, and maybe even better: what his competition is capable of, and after analysing that, he picks the games important enough to play boosts and grudges. AA’s finishing is almost always very good. (Well, thank god, except for last season ?). Anyway, I guess it would not have surprised anyone if we would have seen 2 grudges here, but knowing that only 1 grudge would be played, I think anyone would have guessed that that one would come from Martijn. And of course, it did. It turned out to be a grudge well-spent, as it brought DL the victory. Sure, a first quick look might make you think that it wasn’t just the grudge, but that AA was unfortunate to end the match with 9 players, because of 2 red cards. Of course, that was unfortunate, but doing the math learns us that that “only” cost them 7.32 EMP, and that means that the difference in EMP would still have been 10 in DL’s favour, and with that, I think that DL would have won this match anyway. Important victory for DL, who are leading the table now without AA. Now we have to wait and see what TB has done, to see if DL will lead the table on their own, or if we have 2 teams leading the table. (Not taken goal difference in account, that is….)

SAEFL SEASON 12 WEEK 7

FC Inferno is, with 7 points, close behind the leaders of the table, only 1 victory away. After the previous match, we see that AA is the first team that they can catch up with. However, in order to achieve that, FI needs to beat The Jazz, the new team in Div 1, who had a slow start but are in the winning mood after last week. Marco understood that you cannot underestimate a team in the winning mood, and played a boost to secure a victory. That boost indeed was enough (more than enough?) to beat TJ. Stewart didn’t do anything wrong, FI was just too good: the difference was 18 EMP. That resulted in 5 chances for FI against none for TJ, with a 3-0 win in the end. FI catch up with AA, and Marco will be interested what JG and TB have done, because unlike Stewart, he can look up the table.

SAEFL SEASON 12 WEEK 7

Well, in spite of the victory in the previous match, Marco doesn’t catch up with Jazz Greats, because they won their match as well, in fact, they won it even bigger! Up front, you might expect that the confrontation between JG and Catbel Athletic, the reigning champion, would be an exciting game. But it wasn’t. The team that Bart sent on the pitch was way better than the team that Ivo fielded, and after 5 matches it has to be said that CA doesn’t play like a (reigning) champion this season. While JG, on the other hand, does. Bart even played a boost to make sure he would not be confronted with a sudden unlucky draw. And that made that JG’s Wingplay was much better than the tactically chosen OFF. The 8-0 makes that JG pass AA and climb to the 3rd place on the table, while CA remain in the bottom half after another defeat, and Ivo has to get worried by now, cause CA needs to win some matches if they want to stay out of trouble.

SAEFL SEASON 12 WEEK 7

With 4 and 3 points, InterQuartile Rangers and Tottenford Heats are teams in the bottom half of the table. A victory would be welcomed by either team of course, as both IQ and TH are just above the relegation zone, so points are needed. A win would most likely mean climbing up to the top half of the table, after we saw CA lose their game. Neither Mark nor Terry chose to play a boost or grudge, and so we were shown a “regular” confrontation, in which IQ had the best of NSL, but TH had the best EMP. In a game with a lot of chances, that resulted in more chances for TH (34 against 29), and with a NSL 10 Goalie on both sides (and both performing equally good, by the way), the outcome in the end was a 16-12 win for TH, and that was a fair result. TH climb the table, as they pass both IQ and TH, but if they want to climb to the top half of the table, they have to await what NW will have done.

SAEFL SEASON 12 WEEK 7

But first, we have a look at what The Boelewieten did this week, as they were leading the table with AA and DL before today. In order to stay in the lead, together with DL, they had to beat Apocalypse, and AP this season looks like a strange story. They are on the bottom of the table, and that is not where you would expect them, especially not after AP’s good results in previous seasons. Besides, just look at the team: this week, they are able to field more than 101 EMP, and that with their usual attacking WP tactics. However, Jeroen played the ideal antitactics against WP: OFF. And not just that, no, Jeroen also played a boost, and I think that that was just enough to be the better team and win the 3 points. (just have a look at the difference in EMP: it’s only 3!!) With that victory, it’s AP who remain in 12th position and TB who keep leading the table with 13 points out of 5 matches. After last weeks grudge, Jeroen made very good tactical move by playing that boost, for the second week in a row. Is this a coincidence, or are we witnessing him finally understanding this game? Let’s wait and see what he does next week, before making a statement on that. And for AP? Well, who knows what might have happened if they would have played a boost as well. Anyway, they still have it, so Martin can always use it in another match.

SAEFL SEASON 12 WEEK 7

NoShaKi WC’98 and Grammar United are the numbers 8 and 11 on the league table. And just like in the IQ-TH game, of course both Mike and Michael would want to win this game, as the differences aren’t that big yet, and a win could mean a big step forward. For NW, it could even mean climbing to the top half of the table. Mike decided, especially since it was a home game, that this game had to be won, and with GU as opponent, he figured that a boost needed to be played, to prevent the risk of a 0-0 outcome. That boost did it for him. Well, that plus the red card for GU’s DS Farley, as that cost them 15 EMP! Even without the 15 EMP difference, NW still would have been better. But now they had 4 chances, of which they scored 3 goals, and you never know if the chance that was missed would have been NW’s only chance if GU would have ended the match with 11 players. Oh well, Mike won’t care, as his NW climbs up. Michael will need to win some more matches to get GU out of that danger zone. Well: in the next round of league matches, we have the clash between AP and GU, the numbers 11 and 12 of the table, so at least one of them will win points there!
