DIVISION 1 GAMES

The first match in div 1 this week is a top match! It’s the clash between the numbers 2 and 3 in the league, The Boelewieten and Jazz Greats, and besides that it is also an important match in the unofficial “who’s the best Dutch manager?” competition. Well, this round was not for Jeroen but for Bart. Bart is known for his tactical surprises, and Jeroen kinda anticipated on that, I guess. JG being famous for its strong WingPlay, has to rest the freaks once in a while of course. It’s all about picking these games. A good occasion would be one of those matches that you expect some other manager to play OFF against you, against that strong WP. Then it comes in handy to have a strong alternative too, and beat that OFF with it. That is what Jeroen was hoping for. He hoped Bart would play something else than WP, to outsmart his own expected OFF. So instead of playing OFF, Jeroen played the strongest possible ZD, and reached a respectable 141 plus EMP. But when it really came down to it, it turned out that Jeroen outsmarted himself, and not Bart. Barts tactical surprise this week was no alternative tactics. No way, Bart wants to go for the title this season, and well, in that situation you don’t rest your freaks and play your second best tactics when you’re playing against the number 2 of the table. Hell no, you play your strongest team, and besides that you play a grudge too. Well, with the ZD bonus added to JG’s Wingplay team, JG managed to reach no less than 167.15 EMP!!! (Peter, is this a record?) It sure must be one of the highest reached EMP ever. Of course, that was too much for TB, and the only thing that Jeroen can be pleased about, was the form of his GK, saving 16 out of 22 chances. Wrong bet this time, but hey, you can’t always win. But I bet the thinking about it must have been great! That is one of those things that make SAEFL great. Especially when it works out, I know, but even if it fails you still had fun making up these tricks. By the way: it looks like the old days of AA and NW are back, we just saw 5 freaks in one match!!

SAEFL SEASON 12 WEEK 9

In a match between 2 very strong ZD teams, unless something unexpected happens, you can count on a 0-0 in the end. This match between Tottenford Heats and Alcohol Anonymous was no different. AA and TH are the numbers 5 and 7 on the league table. Actually, you’d expect Mark and Nathan and their teams a couple of places higher, but after this goalless draw, you won’t see that happen this week. Must be a result of more games like this. That is one of the disadvantages of playing ZD. You can make a very strong lineup, but you don’t create too many chances of your own. And if you play against an opponent that is not much weaker or stronger, who plays defense too, you need a penalty to win. In this match, no penalty was awarded, so it started as it ended. Nathan’s AA sees JG walk away, and have to wait what FI and DL have done this week, assuming AA still wants to go for the title (which they still should, in my opinion). Mark already showed that TH’s first priority is in the cup this year (unless he brilliantly fooled us!), so he won’t mind too much I guess.

SAEFL SEASON 12 WEEK 9

Catbel Athletic and InterQuartile Rangers, 2 of the 3 new teams in div 1 last season, and what a season they had! CA won the title, and IQ won the cup. Not bad for newly promoted teams. This year, we have seen that Ivo and Terry are not doing as great as last season. Of course, you can’t say anything yet about cup results, but both CA and IQ are just above the relegation zone, with 4 points out of 5 matches, and that is not where you’d expect the reigning champion and cupwinner. One of these 2 could do something about that by winning this confrontation. Losing this match could even mean dropping into the relegation zone, so this confrontation was of a certain importance you might say. Terry understood that, and played a boost, while Ivo apparently hoped that his strongest team would be strong enough on home ground. That was not in vain, so it turned out, as CA was 8.5 EMP stronger than IQ. Given the fact that both CA and IQ played relatively attacking (CP against ONE), that meant quite some chances. Because of the EMP difference, CA had more chances of course, and when CA also had the better GK, the 21-12 victory in the end was not surprising. CA move away from the danger zone, while IQ have to watch out now. Anyhow, both Ivo and Terry will be pleased that there will be plenty of matches left this season to set things right.

SAEFL SEASON 12 WEEK 9

Druss Legends against FC Inferno is the clash between the numbers 1 and 4 of the table, and after having seen JG beat TB, it indeed means that the entire top 4 played against each other. Good news for Nathan: at least one of these rivals would lose points. That turned out to be FI. Marco obviously not picked this game to win, rested a lot of good players, and played SM with the B squad in order to control the damage. That might have been a wise decision, because Martijn played a very strong WP team once again, reaching almost 140 EMP, and even with their strongest team, FI would have had a hell of a job to withstand that. But under these current circumstances, it was just a regular win. DL beats FI, just like DL beats teams every week. We tend to get used to that, so much that we would almost forget that DL was still in div 2 last season, and that Martijn is simply doing great with DL. Marco and FI take a step back in the race for the title, but remain in the top of div 1 of course.

SAEFL SEASON 12 WEEK 9

Grammar United and Apocalypse are the numbers 11 and 12 in the first division, both with “only” 1 point out of the first 5 matches. But even though there are still 17 matches left to play (including this one of course), you might even call this a relegation battle already, as I think the team that loses this match will be in trouble already. Neither Michael nor Martin played a grudge. Not even a boost in fact. That’s not that strange actually, maybe both managers hoped on winning this match without it, wanting to keep the extra’s for matches against other bottom half teams? You never know. Anyway, we saw a very defensive tactics (TS, from GU of course) against a very attacking tactics (the usual WP from AP). It was AP who were slightly better in NSL and in EMP. That resulted in 8 chances for AP, against 5 for GU. Both teams with a NSL GK, so the 4-2 in AP’s favour in the end was no stolen victory. Michael won’t like this result, as now he’s all alone at the bottom, still waiting for the first win. Martin will be happy with the first win of the season, as its the first step towards a better position. Will it be enough to escape the relegation zone? He will at least keep GU and IQ beneath him, after we have seen the matches so far. So, to escape the relegation zone, we have to wait for the last match and see what TJ have done.

SAEFL SEASON 12 WEEK 9

…and well well, look what we have here! Stewart obviously knew that his 2 biggest competitors at the moment were playing against each other, so at least one of them would win points. Stewart thought that he would want to keep everything in his own hand, and when The Jazz played their home game against NoShaKi WC’98, he played a grudge to secure a win. Of course, this was a very good moment to play it, good thinking Stewart! Mike played a reasonably strong WP team with his NW, and was unlucky to see W Joaquin leave the pitch early, due to a red card. But even without that red card, I don’t think that Mike can or will say anything about this defeat. TJ was the better team this week, and the victory was deserved. TJ escape the relegation zone with the 3 points won, and are only 1 point behind NW now.
