DIVISION 2 GAMES

Newton Heath and Fanatics United are only 3 points apart. Only one win. Yet, when you look at the table, you see that NH is just above the relegation zone and has to look down and watch out, while FU are on 4th position, only 1 victory away from a direct promotion position. You see, the league tables look more and more realistic every week, but still, after only 5 matches you can’t say too much about it either. Robert, being an experienced manager, knows that of course. He thought the best way to do something about that, was playing a boost, win the match and make the league table look a little better in the next week. The idea was good, but the result wasn’t. In spite of NH’s grudge, Brians FU was still the better team. With a strong CP, they countered NH’s ONE play, and created a lot more chances. FU needed those chances actually, as their NSL 9 GK wasn’t as good as the NSL 10 opponent of course. But FU managed to create enough chances to score more goals than NH, and that is what brings victories. In this case: 13-10. FU stay in the race for the top places, while NH still have to watch out for that relegation line. Sounds exactly as how this story started, but now with a 6 point difference between these 2 teams, instead of 3. You see, the league tables look more and more realistic every week.

SAEFL SEASON 12 WEEK 9

England Under 21 are in the relegation zone, and when I notice that Mike has to play a NSL 4.5 player in a home match, I am afraid that EU will have a tough job to do something about that. This week, it turned out that indeed it was not enough to beat Dead Scientists, who are at 3rd position, and after having seen FU win the previous game, Tim had to win too to keep that 3rd position. That is exactly what DS did. DS weren’t great, but against the 82 NSL that EU fielded, they didn’t have to be to still win those 3 points. DS stay in the race for the top positions, while EU has to work out a way to fight back and escape relegation.

SAEFL SEASON 12 WEEK 9

Oaklake City is another team in the danger zone. You would not expect a team that can field a 95 NSL CP team and EMP over 120 in the danger zone in div 2, but OC is. Keith hasn’t been too lucky, that is one thing. But another thing: just have a look at this weeks match against Adirondak Renegades: Don simply played an even better team, EMPed more than 126, and well, that was enough for a 14-8 victory. And you can’t even call that unlucky. When I look at other div 2 matches, and compare those stats with OC, I still think that OC must be able to do something about their poor league position. Keith will see that too, I think. Don of course is doing fine with AR. Who knows what AR will be capable of this season.

SAEFL SEASON 12 WEEK 9

Defrosted Tunafish, the number 8 on the league table, play at home against Excelsior Warren, currently number 2 on the table. That might look like a big difference, but the truth is that DT is perfectly capably of beating EW in a home match. In fact, that is exactly what they should have done this week, because they proved to be a lot better! Just look at it: Claudio played with a WP team that was almost 4 NSL better than Simons OFF team. Sure, OFF does a lot damage to attackers in a WP system, so Simon chose the right anti-tactics, no doubt about that. Still, DT was 11.5 EMP better. That resulted in 27 chances for DT, against “only” 18 for EW. One look at both goalies learns that they are equally strong: NSL 9. That should be enough for DT to win, you’d say. But they didn’t. For some reason, the DT chances were missed easily, and the EW chances weren’t. And in the end, the result was the narrowest possible win, only 1 goal difference, but that win was in EW’s favour. Sneaky win you say? I’m sure Simon won’t mind. That’s football, right? Claudio’s luck will hopefully turn soon.

SAEFL SEASON 12 WEEK 9

Having seen the previous match, you’d think that that ironic twist of faith won’t happen that much. At least not every week. Well guess again, because it does! In the same league, for all sakes! Kelly Point of Napier play their home match against Nuno’s Lisbon United. LU is the proud leader of the table, and with the football they showed us in the previous weeks, you’d say that the question is not IF LU will win the title, but WHEN they will win the title. But this weeks match proves different. Nuno did nothing wrong. He played a strong CP team, and knowing that PN has a pretty strong team too, he even threw in a Grudge to grab the 3 points in this difficult away game. With 142 EMP against 122, almost 20 EMP difference, he should have. With 47 chances against 30, he should have. Both teams with a NSL 9 GK….sounds familiar? Yep! Just like in the previous game, the result in the end was the match upside-down: PN beats LU 19-18. No worries yet for Nuno, he has to regard this to be an incidents, and incidents will happen. For Kelly, the 3 points will be very welcome in PN’s fight for a good league position.

SAEFL SEASON 12 WEEK 9

Deo Volente are the only team in div 2 still waiting for the first points of the season. Of course Otto wanted to do something about that, and in this home game against Englehart Storm, he had an excellent opportunity to go for DV’s first victory. When ES did not even play their strongest team, and rested some good players, it was enough for DV to win the first match easily, without even having to play a boost or grudge. Without going all the way, DV was much better, and that showed in NSL, EMP, chances, and eventually goals. The 21-5 was enough for 3 points, but not for escaping the relegation zone. However, who knows what DV is capable of, now they have tasted the first victory. ES have to worry not to get too careless in matches like these, if they want to stay in div 2.
