DIVISION 3 GAMES

Blue Storm, a bottom half team, faced a tough match this week, as they played (at home) against the Speedsters. SS is a title candidate, on 3rd position, only 3 points ahead. SS did something interesting: apparently they rested (some of) their players, and played a grudge in order to make up for the EMP loss. Which indeed can be a good tactic move. However, this week, SS are a little unlucky. In fact, they were quite unlucky! First they saw CM Alonso having to leave the field with a red card. Second, only 3 minutes later, they saw CM Montoya –one of the players that was not chosen to rest this week- leave the field with an injury. And third, as a result of this, they saw that they weren’t good enough anymore to beat BS. The 0-0 in the end may sound boring, but at least we know that it wasn’t. After last weeks draw, SS loses 4 points in 2 weeks, so they have to watch out if they want to stay in the race for the title!

Englehart Storm and Trav Spoodle are the numbers 7 and 4 on the table, separated by 8 points. Which means that both teams are in the race for the playoffs, and TS even for something more. They are “only” 4 points behind the leader of the table, and after we just saw SS lose points, who knows what else might be possible. Which is probably the reason that, in a sold-out Englehart Dome, TS played a boost in an effort to get the best of it, and ES didn’t. Looking at the outcome of this game, you might think that it was a very wise move: the 14-12 victory for TS is kinda narrow, so it must have been the boost, right? Well, the thing is that, especially with the boost, TS are in fact unlucky that they didn’t win bigger! They were the better team (and they would have been that as well without a boost), with more NSL and more EMP. They were almost 10 EMP better in the end, and with both teams playing attacking tactics, that resulted in 32 chances for TS, against 25 for ES. If you consider then, that TS played with a NSL 10 GK, against no more than NSL 8 GK for ES, you will agree that TS’s win should have been a lot higher. Anyway, in this case, the positive thing is that the boost wasn’t spent for nothing! TS climb to at least 3rd position, and could even reach 2nd if FA lose their match this week.

Dead Scientists are the biggest revelation in the cup, after reaching the semi-finals. And even in the league, they are doing fine with a solid playoff position (5th), although it has become clear in the past few weeks that it is hard to perform well in both cup and league. This week is just another example of that, when DS plays against Adelaide Kickers. AK are the number 9 on the table, and didn’t even play a great team. In fact, they played no more than 85 NSL, and that was even including a boost. However, it was because of that boost, plus the red card for S T.Janssen, that AK turned out to be the stronger team in the end. It wasn’t that big a difference, but it was enough for a 1-0 victory that could be called fair. AK remain at 9th position, but the win makes that they are no more than 5 points behind DS now, who remain in the top half because ES already lost their game this week.

Vitesse Arnhem and Melchester Rovers are the bottom 2 teams, on positions 11 and 12, both with 10 points. VA the number 12 on goal difference. Of course, no team wants to be in last position, so this clash against each other is the best possible way to do something about it. But where VA recognized that opportunity, and wanted to seize it by playing a grudge, MR didn’t. That of course made the difference in this game. VA was the better team, and after scoring 3 out of 4 chances, the 3-0 victory was very much deserved. With that, VA climb from last to 11th position, with the same number of points as BS on 10 position, but –indeed-, VA’s goal difference still isn’t that good. MR have some work to do now, as I am sure that they want to get back.

Here’s the news that TS have been waiting for! In the match of the week for div 3, the clash between the numbers 1 and 2, points were to be spilled for sure! EU were the nr. 1 before this match, 2 points ahead. They knew that this match could not be lost if they wanted to stay in the lead, so they played their strong WP plus a grudge on top of that. Apparantly, FA expected this to happen, and decided that their grudges could be spent better, as even with a grudge, it would be difficult to win this one. Could turn out to be a wise decision in the end of course. For this particular match though, of course it meant that EU was too strong for FA, and the 11-6 in the end was no more than a logical result. With the victory and the 3 points, EU stay in the lead, and that brings them a step closer towards the title. That step is still very small though, as now TS are chasing them, only 4 points behind. With 6 matches left to play, everything is still possible!

The African Selection and Aros VSK are 2 teams that are both still in the race for the playoffs. AV are on 6th position, with 22 points, and although AS are on 8th position, they are 3 points behind, so only 1 win away! Neither team put in a little extra effort though, by playing a boost or a grudge. And since both teams appeared to be equally strong, a draw can be considered a fair result, as neither team really deserved to lose this match. On the other hand, this draw actually means that both teams lose 2 points, in this rather important stage of the season. Because both ES (on 7th) and DS (on 5th position) lost their match this week, they still did a good job, although for AS it meant that they are still in the bottom half.
