DIVISION 2 GAMES

Excelsior Warren and Defrosted Tunafish were the numbers 4 and 5 last season, and they were both eliminated in the playoffs in a final effort to win promotion to div 1. This demonstrates that we have 2 good teams here, and the fact that already in this first week of the season, Simon and Claudio face each other, means the first top match this week in div 2. Both EW and DT picked up where they left last season: they played solid attacking teams (LB vs. WP), and both teams EMPing aroung 125, they showed that they will most likely be fighting for top places again this season. DT was a little better, and also had a better goalie, but with 24 against 22 chances, anything is possible, and this 14-14 draw is not exactly a surprise. Sure, Simon may count himself a little lucky here, as if DT would have won, it would not have been surprising either.

SAEFL Season 13 WEEK 1

The Jazz is the first team that we meet this week that has relegated, back to div 2. In their first match they meet Fanatics United, last seasons nr. 6 (so top half material), at Crazy Park. Both Denis and Stewart fielded below 90 NSL, but seemed almost equally strong. In fact, amongst others because of their home advantage, it was FU who were a little better, and had 6.5 EMP more. Which resulted in 12 chances for FU against 8 for TJ. But what decided this match was not the EMP both teams generated, no, it was the goalies. Where TJ had a NSL 10 goalie, FU’s GK was only NSL 8, and that is a big difference. F.Bitburger was not able to save a single shot, while G.Krupa on the other side had a 75% savings rate, and that meant that TJ beat FU:8-3 In spite of the win, when you compare this to the previous game, TJ still has some work to do if they want to get back to div 1 at short notice. FU of course also has some work to do, for instance knowing always to play the best possible goalkeeper, as that can make a big difference.

SAEFL Season 13 WEEK 1

Grammar United just dropped out of div1, and Stannington Historical just got promoted from div 2. In this first match of the season, they play against each other, and apparently the difference between the bottom of Div 1 and the top of Div 3 is not that big, as SH wins big: no less than 1-9! In NSL, the difference wasn’t even that big, only 5 NSL, but Mike apparently did not take in mind that Len usually plays WP, and so we saw GU play ZD against WP. That is what we call mission impossible, and that showed, just look at the stats. It is only because of the good performance of the GU goalie, or else the win would even have been higher! SH are off to a very good start with this comfortable victory, and maybe the EMP is a little too much, but even against an other tactic, I bet it would still have been nice, so who knows what more surprises Len has for us this season. GU will probably play TS or OFF, next time they face a WP team.

SAEFL Season 13 WEEK 1

Apocalypse is the second team we see in action this week, that just got relegated from Div1. Unlike GU, they put off a good performance in what might be the first step towards a getting back to div 1 plan, in their away game against Oaklake City. Looking at the stats, and actually also looking at last seasons stats, it makes you wonder how AP ever got relegated in the first place, with a bunch of players that are that good. Too bad for Craig that he stepped in just too late to do something about it, but for this year, I bet AP will be one of the teams to watch when it comes to the fight for the title. Keith already expected AP to play WP, and anticipated by playing CP, another strong tactics, but OC just wasn’t ready to take on AP just now. And besides that, the red card for Pacheco didn’t help either, of course. The only thing that AP has to watch out for is not letting a not-so-good GK spoil the EMP surplus that a great team wins him. Nonetheless, I am curious where it will end this year for Craig and AP. Keith doesn’t have to worry right now, after losing just one game. He will probably know as well that OC is not the strongest team in div 2, but I see them in a fight for that final playoff spot, and who knows what more if aging and trades are kind.

SAEFL Season 13 WEEK 1

Newton Heath and Fantastic Eleven are 2 teams who I don’t see fighting for the title this year, at least not yet. NH narrowly escaped relegation last season on goal difference, while FE was the 3rd team to win promotion from div 3. In this match against each other, both Robert and Clive of course knew that a win could be very important, as it would mean you probably beat a direct competitor an a race against for example a playoff position (if things are going well), or maybe even against relegation (if things are going not so well). They fielded almost similar teams, ONE on one side, and WP on the other side, and it was only because of the home advantage that NH was a little better. They created 31 chances against 26, and with 2 NSL 10 goalies, NH could have won this match, but they didn’t. With a 15-15 draw they didn’t lose it either, because that would have been unfair. Lucky point for Clive, and well, both teams at least did not lose their first game.

SAEFL Season 13 WEEK 1

Deo Volente is the team that just missed the last playoff spot on goal difference, and of course, if Otto and his team would like to continue their growth, a top half position is what they are aiming for. At least. Their first step is the match against Smoking Guns, and that is not an easy step, as Monty and SG have won most of their matches last year, which resulted in a second place and direct promotion to Div 2. In this particular game, both Otto and Monty put 94 NSL on the pitch, but where SG got 117 EMP, DV got 127, and that’s what made the difference. DV’s CP simply was stronger than SG’s ONE, and that showed in EMP, chances and eventually in goals. The 12-8 in the end was a nice reflection of the both teams strength. DV have the start they wished for, while SG will notice that Div 2 is really something else, but the good thing for SG is that they have a cunning manager in Monty.
