DIVISION 3 GAMES

Trav Spoodle was a top half team last season, but of course that means nothing compared to their cup success, as Warren led TS all the way to the final! In this first match of the season, they take on Aros VSK. Aros was a bottom half team last year, destined to do better this year, and Marc did not hesitate to live up to those expectations already in the very first week: he played a GC. That on top of the 102.25 NSL (!!) that he fielded….I bet anyone would believe that AV won this game. But they didn’t. For some reason, AV just didn’t pick the right tactics, and got almost no bonus EMP, where TS did get quite a lot of bonus EMP, in spite of playing WP with attackers without very good NSL. TS had 121 EMP against 113 for AV, and that was too much for AV to make up for. The 11-7 for TS was deserved, and who knows what TS will be capable of this season. I am sure that Marc will be disappointed, and he has every right to be, but next time he really needs to pick a better tactics.

Blue Storm and Vitesse Arnhem were bottom half teams last season, both of course destined to be a top half team this season. For that, in this match against each other, a victory of course would be a wonderful start for either team. Both teams fielded 93 NSL, and where VA played WP –as expected- BS countered that with OFF. That made proved to be an adequate move, and because of the home advantage, it even made that BS was a little better than VA. They created 22 chances, against 17 for VA, and since BS had a better goalie, BS actually deserved a win. However, VA was lucky that their GK gave a top performance, and saved a lot of chances, leading to a 6-6 draw in the end. Too bad for BS, lucky point for VA.

Englehart Storm is the first team we see this week that relegated from div 2. They play against the African Selects, who relegated a year before. AS already were a top half team this year, and this season I bet Colin wants to take the next step and head back to div 2. However, Derek must have thought “But not at my expense!”, and played a strong ONE. Very strong in fact, regarding it’s div 3 here. But on the other side, Colin played that very strong defense again, and like so many matches last year, it was too strong for ES, and the match ended 0-0. Looking at the stats, I bet both teams must be capable to go for at least a top half position. Colins only worry must be that, in spite of the fact that it will be very hard to score against AS, a lot of 0-0 matches don’t win you many points either.

Speedsters and Melchester Rovers were the numbers 8 and 5 last season (in this particular order), both very much in the race for the playoffs. Only 3 points separated them after 22 matches (a MR victory in a clash against each other), and made that MR reached the playoffs where SS didn’t. Of course, fighting for a playoff spot is at least what Shaun and Bruce have in mind for this season, so who knows how decisive this match against each other could be in the end. It was MR who fielded the most NSL, but –even in spite of a red card- it was SS with more EMP, and that was enough for a 14-10 win. Shaun will be happy with the good start, where Monty will have to pick himself up and try to get revenge in next weeks home game.

England U21 is the second team in div 3 that just got relegated. In spite of last seasons relegation, I think EU still has a good team, and Martin was unlucky that he took over EU when it was already too late. For this year, I am positive that he will have high ambitions, and I don’t know his roster but I assume it will be good enough to live up to those ambitions. The first match for them is against Adelaide Kickers, the number 7 of last season and with that the first team that just missed out on the last playoff spot. This weeks result won’t do them any good in an effort to do better this year, as the 113 EMP ONE game was not nearly enough to face EU’s very strong WH. Without playing a boost or grudged, they were very cool and reached over 132 EMP, which is very high in div 3! With that, Martin and EU successfully applied for the job “title candidate”.

The last team that dropped from div 2 is Dead Scientists, and in their first match to climb back to div 2, they face the Falcons. Falcons were the number last team last season, so on paper, it looked like an easy job for DS, but of course that was not what Nik had in mind. Already last season, Nik was building on a better team, and looking at what he played this week, he looks successful in that effort. With a strong WH, he overpowered the DS defense, and the 2-0 victory in the end was not just a fair victory, no, I think DS can call themselves lucky that the win wasn’t any higher. Oh well, the most important thing for FA is that the first 3 points are in the pocket, and DS will have to work hard to improve if they are to return to div 2.
