DIVISION 2 GAMES

Apocalypse against Newton Heath is a top half match, but since both teams –in my opinion- are no title candidates (anymore), the main importance of this match will be trying to get the best league position, as that will generate the best playoff spot. It was AP who fully benefited from their home advantage. Well, that plus from the red card for NH’s FB Beckett at the end of the first half. That made that AP was much stronger, and the 8-1 in the end was a welcome result for AP, after last weeks loss. They are 1 step closer to reaching the playoffs, although they have to keep looking out for DT.

Smoking Guns are only 1 point behind 2nd position, and with that very much in the race for direct promotion. In their home match against Grammar United, they play it very, very cool. GU put 2.25 NSL (93.25 against 91) on the pitch, and play a boost on top of that. But SG apparently do not blink, not even once. They know that it is not about NSL, but about EMP. Which is once again proven here. Cause in the end, it turns out that SG is 8.5 EMP better after all, and with that, they win easy: 5-0. With that, SG remain in the race for direct promotion, while GU is officially relegated after this loss.

Fantastic Eleven and Fanatics United are both on 2nd position. Only FU are 2nd in the top half of the table, while FE are in the bottom ? In this match against each other, it is FU that is slightly better, but because FE’s goalie is also slightly better than his opponent, that exactly levels out the difference. Which means that this match ends a draw: 11-11. For FU that means that they lose 2 important points, and they drop from 2nd position, and for FE it means 1 important point in the fight against relegation.

Stannington Historical lost 2 important points in last weeks match against the number last on the table. This week, they make no mistake against the number 9, Excelsior Warren. Both teams acted kind of nervous, we saw 2 red cards (1 on each side) and 3 yellow. It was SH, who had the best of it, and the 10-2 in the end reflected the EMP-surplus. After we just saw FU lose 2 points, it means that SH is very close to winning the title now. They are 6 points ahead of SG (the only team that can catch up with them in points), with only 2 matches left to play. Plus they have a much better goal difference. So, if I were Len, I would put a bottle of champagne in the fridge. EW need to look out for TJ, who were only 2 points behind them, in the battle against relegation.

But The Jazz did not benefit from EW’s mistake (although of course you cannot call it a mistake if you lose the away game against the nr. 1 team). In their home match against Oaklake City, they saw their home advantage countered by a grudge, and when they also suffered from a red card in already the 11th minuted, that turned out to be just too much for them. For OC, the 3 points are not that important anymore. In a best case scenario, they can climb from 12th to 11th position, but even that won’t stop them from relegation. TJ still have 2 weeks left to avoid relegation, and with EW only 2 points (so 1 victory) ahead, I guess this fight will remain exciting against the very end.

Defrosted Tunafish and Deo Volente are the numbers 5 (DV) and 7 (DT) on the table. May not look like much of a difference, but if fact the difference is HUGE, as it means being in a playoff spot or not. DV are 8 points ahead, so a victory would make them sure of the playoffs. Both teams were almost equally good, but not exactly. It was DV who were just a tiny little bit better, in everything. They put just a little bit more NSL on the field (92.5 against 90.25), which made that they performed just a little bit better in EMP (117.70 against 115.45). That resulted in just a little bit more chances (35 against 33), of which they managed to score a tiny bit more (20 against 16). Not much difference, but the consequences are a lot bigger: 3 points for DV, and nothing for DT, and with that, DV climb to 4th position, while DT are out of the race for the playoffs.
