DIVISION 3 GAMES

After last season, Niks focus for the Falcons was on rebuilding. This season, although of course building never finishes, as there is always a next season, we will see how well that pays off. Last week, FA were able to win the first match. This week, FA faces a difficult away game, as they have to play Vitesse Arnhem. VA is one of those teams that is always playing for the playoff spots, and with that of course, they are a top half candidate. However, this week they were not able to withstand the mighty Falcons. In an attractive match in which both coaches played attacking, both teams were equally strong, but it was FA who had the better goalie, and that made the difference: 15-18. With the second win in a row, FA seem to have made that step forward, while VA seems the team that needs structure now.

Dead Scientists and Englehart Storm are 2 of the teams that relegated from div 2. Last week, both teams weren’t able to win their first match, but I guess both DS and ES’s first priority should be working towards a roster with depth and stability, rather then focus only on winning matches and forget about the rest. Sure, the aim in the end should always be to do your best to win every match, but not at all expense of course. In spite of that, Derek already won a point last week, and in this clash against each other, a victory could mean a very good start for ES anyway. In a game in which both teams played attacking, ES indeed was the better team, and because of that, they created 2 more chances: 17 against 15 for DS. However, with those numbers, and equal goalies, you know that everything is possible, and the draw in the end was just one of those possibilities that can be called fair.

After the first week, African Selection and Speedsters are tophalf teams, although of course that doesn’t mean much after just 1 game. Nonetheless, Shaun appeared to be destined to extend SS’s stay in the top half for at least another week, and played a grudge. In spite of the fact that he fielded 5.5 NSL less than Colin did, the grudge more than compensated for that, and it made SS’s attack stronger than AS’s defense. The 3-0 victory in the end was a good reflection of the difference in strength, and even Colin will admit that this victory was fair. Another win and 3 points for SS means that they are off to a really good start, so who knows where it will end. For AS, better weeks will follow, even if only because Colin still has all his grudges left ?

Last week, Marc played a grudge, but was unfortunate to see Aros VSK lose the game after all. Already in the second week, Marc appears destined to get a good result with a grudge anyway, and so he played another in the home game against England U21. That finally paid off! In fact, with a 101 NSL in a home game, plus a red card for EU in the first half, I bet even without the grudge, AV would have won this match. But looking back, it’s always easier to make predictions, right? Martin won’t be happy with the result of course, as it means that already after 1 week, he and EU have to give up the top position in div 3. Anyway, at least now he can’t complain about the red card, as he would have lost this game anyway because of that boost. Besides, I think we will hear more from EU this season whatsoever.

After they weren’t able to win their first match this season (although they didn’t lose it either), Blue Storm were destined to be up with the best, and played a grudge to secure a win. Against the poor Adelaide Kickers, who already lost their first game, and now saw their team reduced to 10 players already in the first half, that was enough to indeed win the match, although because of the OFF tactics, it wasn’t with much EMP difference, and therefore not very convincing. Nonetheless, the win was fair, and that means that BS indeed is steady in the top half, while AK is still waiting for their first point.

Trav Spoodle is the 4th and last team that won their first match. After we saw FA and SS win their second match, and saw EU fail to do that, this match will show if we have 2 or 3 leaders after 2 weeks. Warren faced an away game against Melchester Rovers this week. Bruce and his MR had lost their opening match last week, and of course they were looking for a better result this week. However, they have to wait at least a week longer for that, as it was TS who won the match, and with that we have 3 teams with the full score after 2 weeks. One look at the stats learns everything about MR and TS: Both teams fielded exactly the same NSL, 91.5. MR even had the home advantage, but it was TS who nonetheless performed a lot better, the difference was more than 23 EMP, which is huge! No boosts or grudges were played, so that was of no influence either, which means that the only thing that made the difference, was players plus tactics. In that perspective, it was TS who have the much better balance between players and tactics, even the fact that their GK is not that good did not change anything about it.
