GROUP 1

In the first cup match of the new season, we see NoShaKi WC’98 take on Melchester Rovers. Each time a div 1 team plays against a div 3 team, the pressure to win is on the div 1 team of course. In this particular case, Vince and NW live up to that expectation. In spite of resting their best players themselves, NW was still the better team. And that was because Bruce also rested the best MR players. And with 2 teams resting players, the div 1 team won.

SAEFL Season 13 WEEK 3

Oaklake City versus Druss Legends is a Div 2 team against a Div 1 team. Once again, we saw a manager (Martijn) resting players, but in Keith, we have the first manager this week who played a team to win the match. With a 93.25 NSL CP team, he was a lot better than the 77 NSL WP team that Martijn fielded, and with that, the 22-7 victory was no more than fair. Always good to see that the team that goes for it beats the team that doesn’t, and Keith will agree of course ?

In the Adirondak Renegades against the African Selection match, we see 2 teams that do want to win this game. Given the fact that a lot of managers always rest their players in cup matches, it’s always a pity that one of the managers that DO want to win the game has to lose. In this match, in which both Don and Colin played around 95 NSL, Dons ONE turned out to be more effective than Colins ZD. Too bad for Colin, he would have beaten quite a number of teams I guess, with this performance but was unlucky to play against Don and AR. And you can’t blame them of course for going for the cup as well. Anyway, at least this was the first real cupclash this week. Let’s hope we will see a couple more.

Claudio, manager of Defrosted Tunafish, apparently decided to rest some players too. In his match against Blue Storm FC, he almost got away with it, just look at the stats. BS in fact fielded less NSL, but for them it’s because they don’t have that much possibilities to play better. However, the OFF that BS played looked effective. If it weren’t for the red card for MF Sirius, I doubt if it would have been effective enough, but now in fact it was even enough to beat DT. Sure, without the red card, DT would have won this game, but looking at the stats, I think Claudio did not go for it at all, and will not be very disappointed with the result.

In the Catbel Athletic vs. Aros VSK match, we saw a team that wanted to rest players against a team that wanted to win. Ivo played only 87 NSL, against no less than 101 for Marc. Of course, there was only one result that could be called fair here, and that was a victory for AV. Since no strange things happened, the NSL surplus plus the div 3 bonus of course were enough for a victory: 11-5. The red card for DM Dumb was only in the 87th minute, so that hardly made any difference.

Deo Volente against Apocalypse means the first cupmatch this week, in which 2 teams from the same division play each other. That of course means no “lower division”-bonus, so what the managers play will be decisive. Here, we saw Otto resting players (under 80 NSL), against Craig going for the victory (almost 100 NSL). With that, the difference actually wasn’t even as big as these figures would suspect, but at least the difference was enough for a win for AP, and that of course was no more than fair.

Jazz Greats vs. England U21 means another div1 vs. div3 clash. Bart made a rather strange move here. Apparantly, he considered this match important enough to play a boost and secure the win. But on the other hand, he did not think this match was important enough to play with his best players. Strange, right? Well, without having the intention to be able to read Barts mind (NO WAY!!!), I think Bart wanted to rest players but still win this game. In other words, it’s like betting on 2 horses, and that is never good. On one hand, you could say that Bart is unlucky. In spite of resting some players, he still went a little for it. But in Martin, he faced a manager that also wanted to go for it. Martins div3 bonus was enough to cope with the boost, and with that, in the end both teams did not give in, and were almost equally strong. Since both Bart and Martin did not play very attacking either, the result in the end was 0-0. Which might be a disappointing result for both managers, as apparently, they both wanted to win this game. For EU, you could say that if you really want to gamble on surprising a top team, you better play a boost. I bet with a boost, EU would have won this match. For JG, you could say that if you really want to win a cupmatch against a div 3 team (with all respect), you just play your best team, and then you can even save your boost on top of it.

This match is a typical advantage of the situation that when 2 managers want to rest players and play their B-team, the div 1 team most likely gets away with it, as often their B-squad is just that little better. Of course, if you want to make sure you win that cup match, you can’t afford to rest players (just look at the previous match), but if the cup does not have your first priority, you can always gamble on matches like these, like Nathan did. With a little luck, you might end up with the last 16 or even the last 8 teams in the cup, without much effort. For AA, this scenario has already come 1 step closer with the 3 points from this match. For GU, oh well, I guess Mike won’t care that much, as he rested players as well.

Lisbon United against the Falcons is another match in which both Nuno and Nik rested their players. And although we have different teams, players and tactics here, the result is the same: the B-squad from the div1 team turns out to be better than the B-squad from the div3 team. Just look at the stats: LU only played 88.50 NSL, but that was still 15 NSL better than FA’s team. In that perspective, you can see that the difference between div1 and div 3 teams is not just in the top 11, but also in the depth of the roster. For Nik and FA, the challenge is to build towards that top roster, and for Nuno and LU, the challenge is to keep the roster as good as it is. And when it comes down to it, Nuno has the toughest job. Which on the other hand means that Nik has the best growth perspectives, so who knows what will be possible in the next seasons.

InterQuartile Rangers is one of the few teams that did not rest players, and went for it: they fielded no less than 101 NSL!! That of course means that Terry is going for a nice cup result again, and it also meant that playing his best team was a good decision, as his opponent, Derek and his Englehart Storm, also played their best. For Derek and ES, whose 124 EMP is one of the best performances so far this week (and it might have even been better if it weren’t for that red card), the grapes must be very sour. So few teams that really go for a cup result this week, and ES is unlucky enough to play against one of those few teams. They should deserve better, but we all know that football isn’t always fair.

ES’s bad luck shows in this next match: In spite of the loss against IQ, in most groups ES would still have had a very good chance at making it to the next round. However, Group 6 appears to be the only Group in which all teams are going for a cup result, and with that we can call it the SAEFL group of death! Just look at Fanatics United and Tottenford Heats going, both playing at least 96 NSL ! For TH, it’s no surprise of course, Mark and TH are known for their cup fighting. FU even came close: 14-18 is not that big a difference in goals, and when you look at that red card…………..however, that red card cost FU 7.84 EMP, so TH would still have been the better team. IQ and TH lead the group after the first cup week, but looking at the efforts that ES and FU have given, they can’t afford to take it easy, or they will regret it.

Maybe Warren will have more luck in the next cup rounds, as the remaining 2 teams in Group 7, Stannington Historical and Excelsior Warren, seem to use the cup weeks to rest their players. In this match against each other, both Len and Simon decided to take it easy. That resulted in a match with low NSL, and thus low EMP. EW still had the best of it, after all, and the difference was big enough to call the 2-0 victory just. Simon now has to decide if he still wants to rest his players in the next cup round, or if he wants to try and continue this luck.

Because of div3-bonus, SS even had the best of it after 90 minutes, looking at EMP, but in this match once again it was up to the goalies to decide who wins the game. PN had the better GK (9.5 against 9), and although that was not much difference, it turned out to be enough for the victory: 9-7. Kelly and PN are 1 win away from the second round, while SS still has a chance to make it as well.

In the Smoking Guns against Adelaide Kickers match, we saw that both managers go for it. With 92.25 and 91 NSL, we saw more NSL on the pitch than in a lot of other matches. After 90 minutes, it was Monty who was the luckiest manager. Although the differences weren’t very big, it was more EMP for AK against a better GK for SG. And once again (see also the previous match), it was the latter that did it. Which actually could also mean that Monty wasn’t just lucky. Playing the better GK after all can turn out to be very important, you see.

Much like TH, NH and IQ, FC Inferno is famous for their cup fighting abilities as well. In this match against Dead Scientists however, Marco was unlucky to see his AM Pisco had to leave the field already after 19 minutes. That cost him very expensive points! Look at the stats: FI, being the div1 team, played 92.75 NSL in their match against DS, who decided to rest players and fielded no more than 83.50 NSL. Sounds like there is only one possible outcome, and that is a victory for FI. However, in spite of the low NSL, at least DS played with players that suited the tactics very very well, and with the div3 bonus on top of that, after 90 minutes DS even was better than FI, in EMP!! Because of that red card, of course, I know that, but still…… The difference of course was not enough for a smother shot, and since neither team was awarded a penalty, the game ended 0-0. I bet Marco will be disappointed, and the most frustrating part will be that he did not make any mistake, and still this result is fair.

With Fantastic Eleven against The Jazz, we had 2 div2 teams fighting each other. It was Clive who put more NSL on the pitch then Stewart, and that turned out to be decisive for the victory. The NSL surplus resulted in an EMP surplus, and thus in more chances. Since FE on top of that had the best GK as well, the 20-16 victory in the end was a fair result. With the result of the previous match in mind, it means that TJ is only 1 point behind, while FE is already with 1 leg in the next round.
