DIVISION 3 GAMES

Although of course there’s no such thing as real danger in div 3, Melchester Rovers is a team in the danger zone there. And of course, in spite of the absence of real danger, any team would want to escape that danger zone. Bruce included. That is why he played a boost in this home match against England U-21, as with a victory and the 3 points that go with it, he’d have a good chance on escaping that danger zone. This weeks opponent, EU, however, did not want to cooperate. Martin has EU on 4th position, only 3 points away from leading the table, so with only a little optimism, you could even call that in the race for the title. Because of the boost however, plus the home advantage, it was MR who were the better team. The difference wasn’t very big (not even 3 EMP), but it was there, and it resulted in more chances for MR: 26 against 23. That difference however turned out to be just not big enough to make up for the difference in GK NSL, that was in EU’s favour. And after 90 minutes, it was EU who won the match: 10-12. Too bad for Bruce, with such a good effort, and getting so close….I hope he will have more luck next time. On the other hand, I think it’s a good thing for Martin and EU that they stay in the top of the table.

Aros VSK and Blue Storm are the numbers 7 and 8 on the table, and the winner of the match against each other would most likely climb towards the top half of the table, and with that be very much in the race for the playoffs. It was Marc who very cool anticipated on BS playing ZD, and countered that with a LongBall. With that, his attackers gained so much extra EMP, that it made AV much better than BS. They already were a lot better of course (just look at the NSL), but this smart move really did it! The 4-0 after 90 minutes was a only a logical result, and with that we see AV back in the top half of the table. BS got some work to do……

Dead Scientists and Speedsters are 2 teams in the top half, although for DS, with 4 points it’s very narrow. SS however are one of the 3 teams leading the table, still with the full 9 points out of the first 3 matches. Up till now, DS have shown stronger performances in the cup than in the league, so Shaun may have expected more from this game than the eventual outcome after 90 minutes: 13-11. It turned out that SS’s ONE was not strong enough to beat DS’s WH. Shaun doesn’t have to wonder what he did wrong, as he didn’t do anything wrong. DS just gave a performance so strong that it would beat many teams in entire SAEFL. He also doesn’t need to feel bad about the red card, as that sure cost them EMP, but it was “only” 4.88 EMP, so DS would still have been the better team anyway. So, SS fall back a little, with their first loss of points of the season. Now they will have to wait and see what TS and FA have done.

And already in the next game, we can see that the second of the 3 leaders loses their match as well. In the away game against the African Selection, Trav Spoodle manager Warren decided to rest the important players, and give away the match. That may very well have been a wise decision, as the strong OFF that Colin played against the expected WP could have been too much anyway. The 3-0 in the end was no more than fair, and with that plus the 3 points that go with it, Colin brings AS to where they at least belong: fighting for the playoffs. TS will, just like SS, have to wait what FA have done now.

……….and here’s the answer to that: the Falcons DO manage to win their match, and with that they now are the only team to lead div 3, with the full 12 points after 4 matches. With a strong 93 NSL WP team, they were simply too good for an AK side that almost managed to pull a crazy stunt here, because of the good performance of GK Ryan. However, that would have been too much, and it is only fair to Nik that they came close but did not steal any points eventually. (Man, would he feel robbed!!!) With that result, AK remain on the bottom of div 3 and are still waiting for their first points, whereas FA is the team to beat now, being the only team in div 3 without any loss of points.

Vitesse Arnhem is the last team in the “danger zone” in div 3, and this week we see them try to get out there in their home match against Englehart Storm. With a strong WP, in fact they generated more EMP –and thus more chances- than ES. But Derek was the one to laugh last and best, as where he played a NSL 10 goalie, VA only played NSL 9. As a result of that, ES did much better when it came to finishing the chances, and that in the end is what it’s all about of course. With the victory and the 3 points, we find Derek and ES consolidate their top 5 position.
